CableRail Surface®

Installation of troughs, cables and trough covers along railway tracks

CableRail Surface® installs cable troughs, cables and trough covers in two passes. At 300 metres/hour.

SITS designed and continues to develop the system CableRail Surface®, which installs HDPE for fibre optics or cables in a trough artery along a railway track. These can be copper cables or fibre-optic tubes for telecommunications or railway signalling.

CableRail Surface® installs troughs, cables and covers in a shallow trench that leaves the cover visible at ground level. The troughs can be concrete or composite.

Such an optimal protection provides optimal protection for signals for telecommunication or railway signalling.

CableRail Surface® installs cables in two distinct phases :

  • CableRail Surface® Phase 1 creates a shallow trench and installs cable troughs at 300 metres/hour
  • CableRail Surface® Phase 2 installs copper cables or HDPE tubes for fibre optics and trough covers visible at ground level at 300 metres/hour

CableRail Surface® offers these advantages :

  • Complete installation of cables in just two passes.
  • Protection of cables within a concrete or composite artery
  • Visibility and accessibility of cables during later work projects

CableRail Surface® Phase 1 : Installation of cable troughs

The system CableRail Surface® Phase 1 performs automated installation of cable troughs along a railway track at at 300 metres/hour.

Such troughs form the foundation of cable arteries that receive and protect copper cables and HDPE tubes for fibre optics for telecommunication or railway signalling.

CableRail Surface® Phase 1 performs several operations simultaneously :

  1. Creation of a shallow trench. . This trench assures that later, when the trough covers are installed, they will be parallel to the track and at ground level. The positioning sub-system of CableRail Surface® enables adjustment of trench depth to clear obstacles.
  2. Placement of troughs in the conveyor. They can be concrete or composite.
  3. Installation of cable troughs in the trench.

Thanks to the simultaneous performance of all these operations, the system CableRail Surface® Phase 1 attains an installation rate of 300 metres/hour.

CableRail Surface® Phase 1 distributes and installs cable troughs in a single pass. It thus eliminates the need for advance distribution of troughs along the track, which reduces :

  • The work time of personnel and their exposure to danger related to mechanised operations
  • Temptations for thieves or vandals

Our installation campaigns

Since 1984, the system CableRail Surface® Phase 1 has installed cable troughs on some 3900 kilometres of the French national railway network, including

1100 km on high-speed railway lines (LGVs)

(including the LGVs from Paris to Le Mans, to Lille, to Bordeaux et to Strasbourg and the Lyon-Valence LGV)

2800 km  on conventional lines

CableRail Surface® Phase 2 : Installation of HDPE tubes for fibre optics, copper cables and trough covers

The system CableRail Surface® Phase 2 automates the installation of cables and and trough covers along railway tracks at 300 metres/hour.

It performs these operations on cable troughs previously installed by CableRail Surface® Phase 1 or another method.

CableRail Surface® Phase 2 thus completes the installation of cable arteries. Such arteries protect copper cables or HDPE tubes for fibre optics for telecommunication or railway signalling.

The system performs several operations simultaneously :

  1. Unrolling and installation of cables or HDPE tubes in cable troughs that have already been installed. The system can handle up to six cables or tubes of 8 cm diameter each.
  2. Placement cable covers on a conveyor; they can be concrete or  composite.
  3. Installation of trough covers  on cable troughs previously installed. This closes the artery. The positioning sub-system enables continuous cover installation and adjusts for variations in the height and inclination of the cable troughs.

Because it can realise these operations simultaneously, the system CableRail Surface® Phase 2 performs installation at 300 metres/hour.

CableRail Surface® Phase 2 distributes and installs both cables and HDPE tubes for fibre optics and trough covers in a single pass. It thus eliminates advance distribution of these elements along the railway track, which reduces:

  • The work time personnel require and their exposure to the dangers of mechanised operations
  • Temptations for thieves and vandals

Our installation campaigns

Since 1988, the system CableRail Surface® Phase 2 has installed cables, tubes and trough covers on some 2600 kilometres of the French railway network, as follows :

600 km on high-speed lines (LGVs)

( including the LGVs from Paris to Bordeaux et to Strasbourg and the Lyon-Valence LGV.)

2000 km  on conventional lines.
